CALGARY ─ What was supposed to be a peaceful rally in support of Palestinians in Gaza became a heated clash with pro-Israelis Friday night in downtown Calgary.

The rally held at city hall drew hundreds of supporters of Palestinians in Gaza with chants to "Free free Palestine," and stop the bloodshed, calling for an immediate ceasefire to the conflict and for basic human rights of Palestinian people.

Their message was interrupted though when they and Israel supporters who set up across from the rally exchanged words, with witnesses reporting seeing a physical fight breaking out.

"There were a bunch of people who are pro Israel on the other side who I guess came down here for one reason which was to start something or get their point across, but to do it at the same time as another protest is kind of spitting in someone's face," said Mohamed Eli-Ali.

Zeina Agha also came out in support of Palestine and watched as the two sides exchanged words and a flag get torn.

"The side supporting Palestine walked over to the other side where the Israelis were and started chanting things at each other, they started pushing and shoving each other.
