TORONTO - Five Toronto-area home-improvement companies have paid more than $100,000 in fines for calling people on the National Do Not Call List.

The companies were investigated by the CRTC after receiving complaints from those registered with the list. The companies also failed to register and subscribe with the list operator before making their calls, Canada’s telecom regulator said in a statement, adding the calls were made either directly or through a third-party firm.
