Black smoke billowed high above southeast Calgary, visible for kilometres around, after fire broke out in an industrial area Friday night.

Witnesses tell the Sun the blaze appeared to originate at Consolidated Gypsum, near 120 Ave and 40 St. S.E., around 8:30 p.m.

Fire tore through “a tent in the back, stacked high with what looked like pallets,” said Sean Boudreau via Twitter.

Calgary police confirmed 40 St. S.E. was closed south of 114 Ave. to aid in firefighting efforts.
