MONTREAL - Governments must provide the world's airlines with "essential threat information" to prevent planes from being shot down in war zones, aviation groups said Tuesday.

A coalition led by the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) held a special meeting in Montreal to address the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine on July 17.

One Canadian was among the 298 passengers and crew who were killed. It's believed an anti-aircraft missile destroyed the jet as it flew over territory held by Russian-backed rebels.
