TORONTO -- A 34-year-old Brampton, Ont., man is charged with impaired driving after a dump truck hit scaffolding on the Burlington Skyway Thursday afternoon.

The crash has closed the eastbound lanes for an undetermined length of time.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. when a dump truck with a raised box "struck the Burlington Bay Skyway while travelling the Toronto-bound lanes."

"So the bridge strike caused some damage to the overhead truss and scaffolding fell and it hit another truck," MTO spokesman Astrid Poei said.

The construction zone was set up for the ministry to conduct maintenance on the highway.

"However, no workers were near the bridge strike," Poei said.

Traffic was diverted to Eastport Dr. while the ministry worked on the scene. It is unclear when the eastbound lanes would be reopened.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt warned drivers to "stay away from the area" and find another way through Hamilton, Ont.
