BRAMPTON, Ont. -- City council has voted to send a forensic audit that dug into the spending of Mayor Susan Fennell and her staff to police for investigation.

During the last meeting of this term held Wednesday, Brampton councillors approved sending the report to an as-yet-undetermined police service.

Auditors at Deloitte found Fennell and her staff violated city expense policies more than 260 times.

The violations totalled just over $131,000 and were spent on things like high-end hotels and travel expenses. Auditors said they were not provided with enough information on another nearly $156,000 to determine if it breached city rules.

Councillors also did not escape the damning audit -- nearly $43,000 in improper expenses and credit card charges were found over the past three years.

Fennell released a statement Wednesday night saying while she didn't agree with everything in the audit, she accepted responsibility for its findings.

"I have the privilege and the honour of being the mayor of this great city, and the buck stops here -- with me," she said. "I accept responsibility for all that I do as mayor of Brampton, positive and less positive."
