TORONTO ─ Authorities have identified the body of the Toronto-area man who was on doomed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

Andrei Anghel, 24, was the only Canadian on the flight – en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur -- when it was shot down July 17 over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people aboard. "We're very relieved that he has been identified and that we can bring him home," Lexi Anghel, his older sister, said Friday. "It was luck of the draw that were able to identify him."

The family was notified by Canadian foreign affairs officials Tuesday morning. Anghel's parents will fly to the Netherlands to retrieve the body.

"They are trying to survive at this point. They are relieved he is coming home, but at the same time getting that call re-opened the wound," said Anghel.

Malaysian Airlines officials have said they will cover the cost of her parents' journey to the Netherlands.

Anghel said she has been talking to Canada's foreign affairs ministry daily since the crash and officials have been "extremely helpful." The family also received a letter of condolence from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
