OTTAWA - Firefighters pulled a bull mastiff from a burning home Saturday but couldn’t revive the family pet with CPR in a blaze that spread from one east-end townhouse to another leaving four people homeless.

They were called to the Foxwell St. home at about 1:40 p.m. by a flurry of 911 calls and arrived to find flames shooting out the windows and black smoke billowing.

Searching for people, they found only the dog with his muzzle blackened with soot. They knocked out the fire in a bedroom but it had spread through the attic and into the unit next door. A second alarm was raised and firefighters were able to defend the unit on the other side from damage estimated at $350,000.

The cause is still under investigation but police say it doesn’t appear suspicious.
