Police in Brantford are mystified by a pool of blood found underneath an old railway bridge Tuesday.

The forensics unit confirmed the blood, about half a litre, is human.

The alarming discovery was made by people walking in the area. The bridge is often used by pedestrians crossing the Grand River.

"The evidence at the scene does not suggest a struggle took place," said police spokesperson Nat Laing. "There was no evidence of a blood trail leading away from the area.

"At this time it is unknown if a person injured themselves or another person is involved and caused injuries."

Police continue to search for a person who is injured and may need medical attention and would like to speak with anyone who was in the area in the past two days.
