OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird took to Twitter to lambaste the United Nations for its choice of judge to lead an investigation into potential war crimes in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Baird accused genocide and human rights expert William Schabas of being biased against Israel and said the UN's inquiry will be a "sham."

"UN Human Rights Council continues to be a sham for advancing human rights," Baird tweeted Monday night. "It's an utter shame and will do nothing to promote peace and dignity in Gaza for the Palestinian people."

Schabas has not been shy in his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in particular.

He once wrote in a law journal that Netanyahu is "the single individual most likely to threaten the survival of Israel" and that he'd like to see the Israeli leader "in the dock of the International Criminal Court."
