Scroll past the list of MPs and government agencies and you’ll find a surprising Twitter account Prime Minister Stephen Harper follows: Homer Simpson.

Yes, the leader of Canada only follows 221 Twitter accounts and one of them is the king of animated television.

So, we ask the question: Just what are the quirkiest accounts the leaders of Canada’s big three parties following? The answers might surprise you.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper (@pmharper)

  • Follows 221 accounts
  • Mostly MPs with a few surprises.

1) @HomerJSimpson – Amidst a Twitter feed full of politicians, it must be refreshing to have a “Doh!” thrown in there every once in a while.

2) @BlueJays – The Toronto Blue Jays are the only sports team Harper follows, which is odd, because isn’t he a hockey fanatic? (Although, he does follow the Canadian Curling Association)

3) @RofT (Right of Twitter) – An account for all the conservatives of Twitter. Problem is it only has three tweets... All from 2009. It’s probably safe to unfollow this account, Mr. Harper.

4) @premierministre– Following yourself, even if it is the French version of yourself, is just as bad as liking your own comments on Facebook.

5) @GrecoLeanFit – The fitness guru, Tony Greco. Harper, you getting your swell on in the House of Commons?

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau)

  • Follows 753 accounts
  • Lots of celebrities

1) @pmoharper - No, not the actual Prime Minister, but a parody account. The urge to favourite some of those tweets must be strong.

2) @EdtheSock – Is he trying to get on this vulgar TV personality’s good side?

3) @pmlaurier – Yes, the account for the seventh (and long dead) Canadian Prime Minister. He does realize it’s not actually Laurier manning that account, right?

4) @s---mydadsays – Trudeau is doing anything he can to appear hip. The under-30 crowd should get a laugh out of this. We can picture Trudeau on Twitter in between question periods chuckling at some of those quotes.

5) @Alanis (Morrisette) – “It’s good addviiiiccceeeee” that you don’t tell your bros about this one, Justin.

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair (@ThomasMulcair)

  • Follows 1,197 accounts
  • Non-profit organizations, unions and journalists

1) @SunNewsNetwork – The far-left Mulcair follows a lot of news sources, including the Sun News Network. Some of the stories posted about him must hurt a bit.

2) @22_Minutes – A fan of the show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, he also follows some of the stars of the show.

3) @UnFinckenstein– This is a parody account of the former CRTC chair, Konrad von Finckenstein. Some solid jabs thrown in there.

4) @ChestBras – OK, it’s not what the name implies, so get your head out of the gutter. It’s a French fitness account. (Bras is French for arms.)

5) @WhatWouldJackSa – This account would make sense for the new NDP leader to follow – if some tweets weren't distasteful toward the late Jack Layton, former leader of the party. For example, one of the tweets reads:
