MONTREAL- For better or for worse, in sickness and in health. With or without catering.
A Quebec couple's wedding was ruined after they say the caterer ran off with the $7,500 they paid him.
Julie Lamontagne and Michel Fournier Jr. ended up using their honeymoon budget to feed their 150 guests, spending more than $2,000 on pizza, chicken, chips, and beer.
"The ceremony was great," an emotional Lamontagne told QMI Agency, "but around 3:30 I noticed that there was nothing for anyone to eat, and I started to cry in front of everybody."
The couple says they hired Babalou Catering, which is owned by a childhood friend of the couple, Mark Lee Basombrio. Lamontagne told QMI she gave Basombrio $7,500 of the $8,000 he was due for catering the Aug. 9 wedding.
"He wrote me a Facebook message last week saying that he knows he let everybody down and that he would come see us last Wednesday to pay what he owed us. We're still waiting," said Fournier.
Basombrio has deleted his Facebook page, but the page for his catering company is still online. When QMI tried to reach him by phone, a message indicated his inbox was full.
The couple came up with a plan B and had a local chicken fast food restaurant deliver dinner for 100 people. Another friend went to the restaurant she owned and returned with six large pizzas, fries, and salad.
"I'd like to know why he did this," said Lamontagne. "Maybe I'll laugh about this in 25 years, but today it still hurts."
