Two people died after a small plane crashed on Grand Manan island in New Brunswick early Saturday morning.

In a news release, Ambulance New Brunswick said the aircraft crashed in a wooded area near the Grand Manan Airport around 5 a.m.

"Two pilots, an ANB paramedic and a registered nurse with the Grand Manan Hospital were on board at the time of crash. One pilot and the registered nurse survived. The paramedic and the second pilot did not survive the crash," the organization said on its site.

“We are devastated by this incident,” said Paul Ward of Ambulance New Brunswick. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of our Ambulance New Brunswick paramedic and the pilot from Atlantic Charters who lost their lives.”

The flight crew was returning to Grand Manan Island following a patient transfer from Grand Manan Hospital to the Saint John Regional Hospital when the crash occurred.

“It’s too early at this time to state what exactly happened. The investigation will make those determinations. Certainly, ANB will co-operate fully with investigators in an effort to determine the circumstances surrounding this morning’s tragic event,” said Ward.
