A swim in the Peace River on a hot summer day turned tragic Friday evening with the drowning deaths of three teenage boys from a remote northern Alberta community.

Absalom (also known as Steven) Laboucan, 14, went to the river adjacent to the community of Fox Lake with his two cousins, Daniel Robert, 16, and Alec Metsikassus, 15.

When Steven's mother Louise Laboucan later arrived at the river, she heard screaming and thought the boys were just playing around on the sand bar. But when she got closer she could see two of the boys in deep water. Her son was screaming, then jumped in to help his cousins.

By the time Laboucan arrived at the river's edge, she could only see her son, just lifting his head above the water.
