TORONTO - In a come-to-help-out-Jesus moment, Mayor Rob Ford says he wants the city to reinstate a religious parade’s permit which was cancelled because of road construction.

“I am not saying there won’t be some re-routing, but I want the Jesus in the City parade back on,” the mayor said after learning about Monday's controversy.

The mayor was responding to a column in the Toronto Sun which focused on the recent cancellation of the Sept. 6 parade. City officials cited road resurfacing at Queen’s Park as the reason.

Ford said he was “upset” to hear about the cancellation of next month’s parade and is pushing for the earlier decision to be reversed.

“In view of the circumstances, the Street Events section of Transportation Services cannot approve your request to assemble the parade floats and have parade participants form up along Queen’s Park,” wrote the city’s Rita Hoy. “Shawn Dartsch from our Traffic section indicates that he cannot approve this request as everything hinges on the construction.”
