NDP Opposition Leader Thomas Mulcair said the Conservative government has failed to fulfill its Arctic defence promises.
"Under Stephen Harper, Canada has fallen behind in our work assuring Canadian sovereignty in our part of the Arctic," Mulcair said in Ottawa on Wednesday.
Mulcair was reacting to Harper's ninth annual Northern Tour, during which the Prime Minister announced the government has "embraced" the renewal of Canada's Arctic defences.
"We don't have the icebreakers (the Conservatives) said we would to have - we haven't even given out the contracts for them," Mulcair said.
Harper ended his six-day tour of the Arctic Tuesday in Baffin Island, Nunavut, where he watched the Canadian Forces perform mock Arctic rescue operations and other military exercises.
Harper and his defence staff insist that Canada's Arctic military procurement strategy is "on track."
