TORONTO — A libel notice was served on Twitter Friday, in what might be a legal first.

Political consultant and Sun Media pundit Warren Kinsella threatened to take a Toronto mayoral candidate’s campaign strategist to court for his tweets.

Shillers LLP — the law firm representing Kinsella — sent a notice of libel via Twitter to Nick Kouvalis on Friday after he posted three tweets suggesting Kinsella had been fired from Olivia Chow’s Toronto mayoral campaign.

Kouvalis works for rival candidate John Tory.

“We are the solicitors for Warren Kinsella. Please find attached our client's Notice of Libel," the tweet from Shillers' Twitter account stated along with a link to the notice.

Kinsella's lawyer, David Shiller, said it was the first time he's issued a libel notice through Twitter.
