TORONTO - The CBC casts its vote for hockey.

The NHL season opens on Oct. 6 -- the same date Ontario voters go to the polls to pick the provincial government.

CBC viewers, however, will have Don Cherry and Ron MacLean on their screens that Thursday night instead of political commentators as the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Air Canada Centre.

Network spokesman Jeff Keay said hockey fans won't be completely deprived of election coverage though.

"We will have regular election updates during the Toronto-Montreal game, after the game and during the subsequent Pittsburgh-Vancouver game. We'll also have an information crawl at the bottom of the screen as required," he said.

CBC noted it will also provide information about the provincial election on its other platforms.
