Is Stephen Harper's apology the first step in settling Native land claims? Wed, June 11, 2008
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has apologized on behalf of all Canadians to generations of aboriginals who were victims of a "sad chapter in our history."
I keep reading about how law enforcement isn't doing anything. The front line officers have orders from their superiors not to do anything. They are stuck between the aboriginals and the public and cannot act unless they are given the order. It goes against everything they've been trained for to just sit there and watch. The aboriginals should do like every other group of people: pick themselves up, get educated and get a job. Why should the rest of us keep paying for the sins of our ancestors. We're here, we're staying, get over it.

You can thank the Liberal government for this problem that should have been put to rest 30 years ago.

Enough is enough already, natives want this and that get out and work for it then, time to take the treaty that was signed and put a match to it, we as canadian taxpayers never hear how much money is spent per year on the native population , why is that so well hidden , things would change if our spineless politicians would stand up

We need to bring back Mike Harris to replace this pathetic excuse for a premier.
At least Mike would show some intestinal fortitude, unlike this spineless jellyfish McGuinty.

LMAO! poor indians with all of the BS land claims well I say send them all packin right to prision like you would anyone else. I would love to take a drive up the 401 today and see how many try to get in my way....CRUNCH! I fish and I hunt and every year I hear about fish numbers decreasing yet I still see the natives harvesting out of season and over limits. If you want the money you all say you are intitled to then I say if thats the case bulldose all of the non-traditional buildings and you can set up all the teepee's you like and no car's and get you loin clothes out boys cause thats how things were when your people were wronged. If you were not alive at that time or had anything taken from you then shut you mouth cuz you have gotten more than you should have. STOP ALLOWING INDIAN LAND CLAIMS!!!!!!!!!

I wish the government would get a set of balls.the natives can sell tax free illegal cigarettes, sell tax free gas run illegal casinos and pretty well do what they want.if this was the united states they would have been dealt with.we cannot tolerate these terrorists.thats what they are.if anyone else of any other race blocked the highway or sold illegal contraband they would be locked up.it's time to crack the whip and show them that these kind of activities will not be tolerated anymore.half of the trouble makers look more white than native who's deciding who get's band cards.maybe time for dna testing?

It is very sad to see in a peaceful country like Canada, a group that chooses violence, threats, intimidation and the like to try to get their way. Also as sad is the very weak response law enforcement has made to protect law abiding citizens and public property. This must be ended quickly as Canadians should not be allowing any sort of home grown terrorism.

There is a part of me that does feel bad for them. I can think back to our ancestors who in a lot of ways dealt unfarily with the origional tribes. Yet there is a sense that they themselves have really done nothing at all to better themselves, to help their image, to improve their lifestyle. I believe that the government should settle the land claims, but not under these circumstances. They want to be treated with respect and fairness, yet pull stunts like this that would land any non-native in jail. Stop the violent protests, then you will get your claims.

The situation is ridiculous. If any Canadian other than a Native said they were planning a protest and had guns, they would be in jail.
The housing situation on reserves is often due to people not having respect for the houses that are given to them. Maybe if they had to work for their housing - like the rest of us - they would have more respect for their homes.

We all have the right to our beliefs and the right to express them. We also all have the right to stand up for what is rightfully ours. HOWEVER, I am a white straight person and if I were to light fires on roadways, and publically state I came bearing weapons I would be arrested instantly, and a stop put to what is was I was doing that was unlawful. Just as a 'white straight person' would not be permitted to prance around a downtown street, NAKED, like the gay communiity did last week, with the mayor skipping along side of them. You don't think I wouldn't have had my butt hauled off instantly if I were to publically walk around naked in the streets!!! All this broadcast for children, white and indian to see. This is a great behaviour to teach children! Why not just be like the Americans then, and pass out guns to everyone and then question later why there are so many shootings and the crime rate is so high? The mohawks wonder why the drop out rate and the suicide rate is so high - Take a long hard look at what your teaching your children and maybe then you'll see, your behaviour and your teachings are a good portion of the cause of this, not just our lousy government. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop making the rest of TAX paying Canadians pay for your irresponsible actions, your a disgrace to 'true native people'
