Do police rely too heavily on Tasers? Fri, June 19, 2009
Robert Dziekanski’s mother has filed a lawsuit alleging excessive force and “cruel and unusual” treatment by the four RCMP officers who stunned her son with a Taser.
Ward I do not know the tazer rule. I do know in CPR training that it used to be put on back but has been changed to side because in an unconscious state your throat can relax and you can choke on your back.

"ALL you saw was a few seconds of a video that was not all that well shot."
Are you serious JB?
The news casts showed a few minutes. Most people have seen all 9 minutes.
And the quality was excellent
EH?

This Taser discussion ranks high among those discussions that never need to happen. If you are concerned about being Tasered do not put yourself in a position where you are going to be tasered. If the officer tells you to stop, then stop. If he tells you to stop trying to stab him,you must stop. Those who were tasered were not picked at random from passers by, they were violent or disturbed individuals who had ignored repeated requests or orders to cease what they were doing. The other option is to wade in with the night stick or shoot them where they stand, neither of which will play as well on the news as the taser.
I can hear the bleeding hears saying "Negotiate" - foolish, how do you negotiate with drunk or crazy individuals, you can't. There is no controversy here, just platitudes from the bleeding heart crowd.

Maggie
Rodney king is a bad analogy.
That drug induced monster was speeding at a hundred miles an hour in a res area, evading police. Had a long list of priors including police assault and on the video after repeated hits refused to go down. a tazer would have been great on him. Oh ya after his legal million dollar settlement he stiffed his lawyer, blew all the money and went to jail on another assault charge.

Hi JimBo. "I am not trying to be ignorent or disrespectful". Wow, if only your comments aimed at me were as considerate. To wayne, the procedure in applying CPR is to position the patient on their back in order to allow chest compressions and breaths. After a suspect is tazered, the officers are to also position, if possible, the suspect on their back as this will allow them to regain proper breathing and cardiovascular ability. By that time the officers will already be restraining the suspect and can force them onto their front in order to be hand cuffed. Didn't make this up. Look it up in procedures taught to police issued tazers.

Too many of you are using emotion and not logic.
Think rationally.
ALL you saw was a few seconds of a video that was not all that well shot.
Do not rush to judgement, as some of you have already, whether you are on the side of the victim or the police.
In Manitoba, to use a Taser as a Peace Officer, I believe you have to take it yourself first.

I have seen everyone blast tazers but none have a knowledge of them or what police endure on a daily basis. They have solutions that they themselves would never even attempt. The have solutions that have actually got more people killed or hurt in the past than the tazer, police an suspects. They even point out that the cops put there knee on his throat and blame the tazer yet suggest getting rid of the tazer and just using force (that was the knee on the neck part). I do notice the concerned relative just went home and left him there. The airport can confirm without a doubt if he was on the plane that landed (911 security). But this unfortunate escaaltion of many incidents resulting in a death needs to be looked at. It is not any single person's fault or groups fault. I will wait for the enquiry results and support police officers everywhere.

I don't get this. When you murder a man you usually do time. What do they think the taser is, just a toy. These people are now dead because someone has killed them. Aren't they trained to subdue people because they have been doing it for years. Rodney King hello... I would love to know what the percentage of cops are BULLYS.. trying to fix the world when they are so broken themselves. We don't need tasers. New game. New gimmick. They are killing people. They are putting the body into the state of death. What is wrong with us. The police don't seemed to be affected by the person rolling around and screaming with pain, sometimes they just do it again. Just watch the replays. It is still murder. Someone has to answer for these deaths that were CREATED. The man in the airport, that was disgusting.

what are the cops supposed to do? Use harsh language? Obey the orders from the law enforcement officers, ok? Near Ott a young man was shot & it caused a huge uproar in my parents area. No one wanted to talk about the fact that the 'mentally challenged' young man had 2 knives & repeatedly ignored orders to 'drop the knife' all while continuing to advance on the armed officer, or the fact that his equally challenged mother, who only a few feet away in their apt was too busy with a beer & smoke to come out & assist. It is claimed he was mentally a 12 year old. Any 12 year old understands orders like drop the knife..point is, cops have to defend themselves & until the technolgy for 'stunners' comes along, they can only use what is available. Read Mindelle Jacobs article on youth crime & it gives some insight into some of the crime stats facing cops these days. Complete & utter disregard for an officer during a conflict will get you the treatment you deserve...cops can't take the time to do a mental assessment before attempting to arrest someone..they have to act & subdue..officers only have moments to assess & act. In the above situation, it was a crowded airport with how many people around..? that the officers were effectivily protecting from this individual. If you don't like the tazer treatment, you'll positively dispise the new technology coming out that will give police the ability to shut down a fleeing car...

The point of using a taser like others have pointed out is to control a situation quickly, what isn't mentioned is that the safe distance for an unarmed individual (ie. both hands are visibly empty) is 4' or 1.3m. How many of you can cover that in one GOOD step? If your arm span is about your height, then if my math is roughly correct you would be in easy striking distance. If all you knew was that I am roughly six feet, 225 lbs., flailing my arms about while speaking loudly and incoherently how would YOU try to quickly try to get the situation under control without potentially geting seriously injured in an enclosed area?
