Does Earth Hour actually help the environment?
Fri, March 25, 2011

Do you plan on sitting in the dark this Saturday night?

Around the world, people will make the symbolic gesture of showing they support a cleaner world and lower-carbon lifestyle by raising their carbon output.

Earth Hour, started in 2007, encourages people to show their support for the planet by turning their lights off and enjoying the world by candlelight. The problem, of course, is for most Canadians that means turning off a low-carbon energy source and burning pure fossil fuels.

The absurdity is likely lost on most professional environmentalists.

Tweety small flaw in your ointment. I said if they had a choice between the cheaper local and more expensive imported. You so clearly point out, the only choice in winter is the expensive imported. You also point out an increase in price won't starve people because they are willing to pay three times as much for it and still do.

Tweety you are classic, please quote me the people who have no choice. since there are none your list will be short.

So now they do grow stuff in greenhouses in the dead of winter. Your brilliant at proving a point. thanks for continually proving mine.
wayne, 2008-03-06 12:48:26

wayne says to me, tweetypie..

"tweety, you said people pay three times as much for california lettuce than canadian and still buy it,"

I sure did.And I also said they do that in the winter when that is all that is available.

You said if a small carbon tax were added to imported veggies Canadians would stop buying it.I proved you wrong by pointing out people still buy expensive California veggies come winter time

Some how you come up with 3 times more expensive California produce is sitting on the shelf side by side with far cheaper local produce.Which it never is.

wayne foolishly says...

"People always have the option to drive less,"

Think so do you?

Well A lot of people most certainly do not

And of course there are greenhouses in winter, growing trees and plants and tomatoes and such. The tiny amount of veggies that comes out of a greenhouse in Canada in winter is not going to feed the population.

Of course I DO know of a few greenhouses that grow pot in the winter. And it is far superior to pot grown outdoors in the summer.

Unless you know of some greenhouses a few hundred acres big growing corn and fields of carrots

I dont. But if you do direct me to a link

And you are correct Matt, in winter a greenhouse needs heat and that alone would make any carrot that came out of it more expensive than a California carrot.

You want to eat a tree rather than fresh produce from California, go right ahead

Matt asked me, tweetypie..

"So tweety, what do you propose? Keep polluting the environment?"

Well speak for yourself.

As I said earlier, the BC government giving major tax increase to the big polluters on the same day they hit people in cold rural communities with a tax on neccesities is not the way to go.

And starving poor people will not save the enviroment either

Many if everyone just acknowledged there is a problem with the environment and climate and just took it upon yourself to make changes. If that had of been the case all along then governments would not be forced to make those changes for you.

Just look at the people who complained when things like DDT was banned.

And as long as Right Wingers continue to deny there is a problem, and are just content to stick future generations with the bill to clean up the world, then a few penny increase on gas in BC is not going to change anything

And certainly as long as you have people in power like Bush and Harper nothing much is going to change.

EH?
tweetypie, 2008-03-06 12:13:31

Twit you idiot:

It`s getting close to seal hunting time here on PEI,coming over for a visit, would love to see ya.
john, 2008-03-06 12:07:24

They don't grow things in greenhouses in the winter,

That would be news to the greenhouse business.

tweety, you said people pay three times as much for california lettuce than canadian and still buy it, not me.

Please google up the facts for your driver trends.

I tried and got nothing, but you apperently know something no one else does, oh ya, you made it up.

so people have no choice to drive. your kidding right?

People always have the option to drive less, do more on a drive by combining trips, car pool, walk, bike, drive more fuel efficient cars, drive other fuel driven cars. tweety our world is full of choice.
wayne, 2008-03-05 22:18:39

tweety,

No I am against a carbon tax.

I have said that the only way a carbon tax would be effective is if we raise the prices to the point people make other choices.

BTW we do have greenhouses operating today, in the middle of winter, but guess what, they need heat, which means more carbon emissions.

So tweety, what do you propose? Keep polluting the environment? Make it too expensive for the poor to eat? What is your solution?

Maybe some innovative left wing solution like "take money away from the rich and give it to the poor".
Matt, 2008-03-05 16:56:32

Matt says to me, tweetypie..

"You claim to care about people, but laugh that poor can't afford to eat"

You are the one saying you want the price of a carrot and other food so high people will stop eating.

wayne says..

"But guess what, we actually grow greenhouse vegies."

Sure do. But not in the dead of winter

wayne says..

"People also store them"

Yea well you go right ahead and it that lettuce and celery stored in the basement for the last few months.

wayne says and asked me, tweetypie..

"I don't care about US growers, Do you mr Hate USA"

Nope. But if you think they are going to go out of business because Canadians stop buying their produce( as if) for a few months, you are wrong

wayne says..

"Funny how people survived for centuries without transported food."

Not so sure why thats funny but of course they did.

But they were not eating fresh juicy fruit for more than a few months of the year

wayne twistingly says..

"So if people are willing to pay three times as much for california lettuce over local"

Come on wayne, thats not going to work. When local produce is in the stores there is no 3 times more expensive lettuce( or carrots) from California on the shelf

Silly wayne

wayne laughingly says..

"there are other healthy choices."

Words from a very unhealthy person.

So are you saying California fruit and veggies are not healthy? Granted they spray it with poison as they do in Canada!

But that is why you should wash your produce and veggies.

And when eating your cantaloupe and other melons?

Dont eat right to the shell (or skin)Whatever you call it

Eating California veggies is far more healthy than eating no veggies

wayne says..

"Oh you can guarantee people aredriving just as much."

Because they are.

It would take you just a few minutes wayne to Google up the facts for driver behaviour on the Lower Mainland.

And of course people in rural areas with no transit are most certainly driving as much

Matt correctly says to me, tweetypie..

"Yes Quebecs carbon tax was put on the petroleum industry, but it gets passed down to consumers."

Absoloutly.

But in BC not only are people who have no choice but to continue to drive the same amount as always being charged more, they also have to absorb the passed down costs from the petro. companies and trucking firms.

See?

As I said many times, the carbon tax brought in by the right wing government of BC was not thought out very well at all.

In fact what the drunk Campbell was really doing was trying to impress his NEW friend, Arnold

EH?

tweetypie, 2008-03-05 13:09:58

Ah tweety, makes fun of the carrot then brings in lettuce.

classic.

I don't care about US growers, Do you mr Hate USA.

I care about canadian companies and Canadian people.

But guess what, we actually grow greenhouse vegies. People also store them. Funny how people survived for centuries without transported food. But hey, you want to pay a little more for the higher priced food go ahead. there are other healthy choices.

So if people are willing to pay three times as much for california lettuce over local (as if Tweety) than i guess all your complaints about higher food prices are a load of crap.

You are so funny when you talk in circles.

Oh you can guarantee people aredriving just as much. HOW.

Why are SUV and gas guzzling car sales dropping. Oh it has nothing to do with higher gas prices.

What ever tweety.

wayne, 2008-03-05 09:58:00

tweety,

As you laugh about these small increases in the cost of food, or fuel ones car or heat ones houses there are poor people who can't afford to eat or heat their house.

You claim to care about people, but laugh that poor can't afford to eat. The more I think about it, I'm glad you don't like people like me, I don't want to be the hateful kind of person you approve of.

Yes Quebecs carbon tax was put on the petroleum industry, but it gets passed down to consumers.
Matt, 2008-03-04 17:23:20

Matt asked me tweetypie..

"tweety,

When you say only one province has a carbon tax, you mean the one imposed by the left wing Quebec government right?"

No, I mean the carbon tax brought in by the right wing government of BC

Quebec,s little carbon tax was only put onto the petroleum companies if I am not mistaken

wayne wayne wayne

You are a very silly person.

Are you married?

So what you are saying is put a carbon tax on a head of California lettuce so that come winter time when it is all that is available people will stop buying it, which will drive the California lettuce producers out of business?

What, you dont want people to eat healthy.Canadians should stop eating veggies come winter?

"it means it will cost more in canada and no one will buy it"

No wonder you are sick all the time and addicted to medication.I have told you before you must eat properly

Thats hilarious.

Come winter time lettuce from California costs about triple what Canadian lettuce does in the summer.

And guess what.

Canadians are still buying that three times more expensive California lettuce

Just like the BC's 2 and a half cent a liter gas tax.

Gas just went up 7 cents a liter last week.I can guarantee you people are driving just as much. And as earlier stated. In recent years gas prices have risen 40 or more cents a liter and people driving habits in Canada have not changed at all.A less than 3 cent a liter carbon tax in BC will do nothing.Just create a pile of government jobs for people who have to collect the tax then give it back.

So much for you carrot theory.

God thats funny.A couple of cent carbon tax on california fruit will stop people from buying it.People will just stop eating fruit and veggies come winter.

hahaha

EH?
tweetypie, 2008-03-04 15:28:45
