Does Earth Hour actually help the environment?
Fri, March 25, 2011

Do you plan on sitting in the dark this Saturday night?

Around the world, people will make the symbolic gesture of showing they support a cleaner world and lower-carbon lifestyle by raising their carbon output.

Earth Hour, started in 2007, encourages people to show their support for the planet by turning their lights off and enjoying the world by candlelight. The problem, of course, is for most Canadians that means turning off a low-carbon energy source and burning pure fossil fuels.

The absurdity is likely lost on most professional environmentalists.

I'm in agreement that most of the planets climate change is due to the regular cycles the earth goes through. Remeber Mt. Pinataubo? Volcano in the Phillipines that blew its' top about 20 years ago. It put more pollutants into the atmosphere then all the cars have since they have been on the earth and there use to be many more volcanoes.

I'm still of the mind that we need to do what we can to pollute this beautiful land we live in, especially for our own health but still enjoys the luxuries of life, like cars, motorcyles etc. Yes I do use a push reel mower and ride my bicycle among other things to help the planet. To push to make anti pollution laws that would cause widespread unemployment and severly affect our economy and families would just be foolish.

2 major cities in China and India pollute more then all of Canada and they do need to clean up their act but it is their bed and they'll have to sleep in it and are.

Earth hour is an advertisement to keep our minds on the importance of helping the planet when we can, simple as that.

First off carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, it is plant food and is very scarce. We need to boost it to at least 500 ppm by the end of this year. CO2 has very little effect on the temp. according to Piers Corbyn, which is too bad because this planet needs something to halt this global cooling. So for greener, we need more green plant food (CO2) and we need to stop listening to the eco-terrorists who want to run this planet.

Why earth hour??? My family is criticized when we don't dedicate a special hour BUT!!!!we take conservation seriously 365 days a year. Earth hour is an overated ridiculous advertising promo. Lets start walking to the corner store instead of driving. If you live within a mile of work, walk to it. CAR POOL PEOPLE! One person... one vehicle...30 km every day??? And then earth hour?? NO way. If your serious look at alternatives in shopping (packaging, buying local, and BAN disposable 500 ml plastic water bottles!!!

Don't like your modern lifestyle? Move to North Korea if you want to burn whale oil for heat and light again.

Ron Glyn - It`s not about what you think, it`s about what we know -

99.9% of the planet`s scientists has stated that climate change is not just a future possibility, it`s here. Who cares about the economy or how big your next car is if you can`t breathe the air!

This is not a natural turn of events! This kind of climate change should happen over centuries if at all, not over 50 years.

The deniers don`t want to do anything, because it wouldn`t be a comfortable change; it would mess up your lifestyle. Grow up and take some responsibility.

We need a change in additude and it needs to start somewhere. To do nothing because someone else is worse then you hardly helps.

We do need to slow the polution rate down and do things greener.

Turning off lights in Canada for an hour while Asia is polluting the hell out of the world 24/7 is like having a peeing section in the swimming pool.

Personally, I think we need to deal with our problems one at a time. What good does saving the environment do if humanity destroys itself first?

The entire earth and probably the entire solar system goes through a cycle. Some taking as is in earth thousands of years. We are in a warming cycle now and have been for many years. Me father who came to Canada in 1920 told stories of the -70F winters in Northern Alberta along with the five foot snow and four feet ice on the lakes.

Gradually as we kids grew the winters got warmer. The ice thinner. The snow shallower. Until now it hardly freezes and then melts . Four inches of snow is now common. We can see now that I am 70 that the weather has warmed a great deel more. I think it has little to do with pollution or co2 or anything but a natural turn of events. We only need to look at historical data and scientific records to know this world has had many cold times and many warm times. I think we are merely going deeper into a warmer time and eventually we will begin the back turn into cooler times until sometime in several thousand years we will enter another ice age.

Nothing to worry about this saving the planet. It looks after itself.
Ron Glyn, 2011-03-27 19:02:59

No. Its a scam.
