Does Earth Hour actually help the environment? Fri, March 25, 2011
Do you plan on sitting in the dark this Saturday night?
Around the world, people will make the symbolic gesture of showing they support a cleaner world and lower-carbon lifestyle by raising their carbon output.
Earth Hour, started in 2007, encourages people to show their support for the planet by turning their lights off and enjoying the world by candlelight. The problem, of course, is for most Canadians that means turning off a low-carbon energy source and burning pure fossil fuels.
The absurdity is likely lost on most professional environmentalists.
We already have a labour shortage that will continue to get worse for the next few years.
Without the highly productivity methods, we can't increase supply and prices will skyrocket, while offshore countries will make those same products.
We need global action on changing how we work.
As far as your claim it will be a short term effect, I disagree. We will have a significant decrease in our standard of living and changes to our lifestyles.
Depending on the aggressiveness this might be a gentle transition, or it could be an abrupt and messy change.
In any case we won't enjoy the level of prosperity we have today.

OH,wayne says to me,tweetypie..
"i have been talking about a carbon tax all along. I know you just don't agree "
Wrong again.
I never said I am against a carbon tax.
But the way the right wing BC government led by a DRUNK is going about it will do nothing.
The biggest poluters are being give tax breaks, while a person living in Prince George is going to pay more to heat their home from the long cold winters in that part of the world
Maybe if a carbon tax was put on booze, the drunk Gordon Campbell, who likes to drive drunk, might take notice
EH?

wayne asked me., tweetypie..
"how do you know people haven't changed their driving habits. Got any facts to support that."
The stats are widely available wayne.
People in the Lower Mainland have actually increaded their driving in recent years
Do yourself a favour and look them up
And wrong Hammer, no lies
And Oh..
Ginseng indeed is used as an aphrodisiac.
Heres a site for you my new friend hammer.
I know its too late for your last marriage but maybe it will help you in the future.

Hammertime,
I consider myself rather conservative.
I don't think the claimed lefties here are characteristic of the left.
Some of them are quite intelligent with well thought out plans. Many are honest caring people with principles who really see their ideas as solutions for the betterment of all.
I do have respect for many of them, I simply happen to think they are wrong.
Matt, 2008-02-28 14:44:35
Yes matt
It will have one, short term, then it will adapt, like always.
Funny thing is, green tends to be more labour intensive thus driving up the costs, but now more people are working driving up wages. More wages makes for more demand, driving up costs again, so we will make more products to fill that demand (increased supply) driving down prices. more supply means more jobs and the cycle continues.
But the economy won't be living on the credit of future generations any more.
wayne, 2008-02-28 14:20:14
and tweety Ginseng is not an aphrodisiac.
but facts are not your strong point now are they?
Hammertime, 2008-02-28 13:49:35
So tweety
i have been talking about a carbon tax all along. I know you just don't agree with it so that means its off your topic.
how do you know people haven't changed their driving habits. Got any facts to support that.
Of course not.
but talk about off topic, he now goes into harper ruining canada.
Classic Tweety going off with falsehoods.
wayne, 2008-02-28 13:49:11
Tweety you a nothing more than a lieing misinformed fool.
if nothing else this forum has taught me how narrow and bigotted a very large number of lefties really are.
Socialists like tweety are what will put us in a recession.
I feel sorry for the brain injured like her.
Empathy and pity are what she needs.
Hammertime, 2008-02-28 13:47:51
wayne,
I agree, tax the crap out of polluting methods. This will make all our cheap food expensive, and drive up the cost of transportation and heating our homes.
Make these things so expensive people will HAVE to cut back. Don't you think this might have a negative effect on the economy?
Matt, 2008-02-28 13:17:42
So, before we put an end to this thread, lets get it back on course that wayne took way off.
The BC right wing government recently imposed carbon tax will do nothing for the environment. If people in the Lower Mainland didnt change their driving habits when gas prices increased by 40 cents in recent years than a 2.5 cent increase in gas, which comes into effect in July, when people really start doing more driving will do nothing.
Same as heating fuel.People who live in colder climates in BC will still be faced with frigid temps and will still have to heat their homes same as now .
So that will do nothing for the environment
How this BC carbon tax is supposed to drive Canada into recession is beyond me.
The only thing that is going to send us into a recession is Harper.
Imagine, a right wing DRUNKEN premier imposes a do nothing carbon tax and a lieing RIGHT WING Harper about to send Canada into recession and deficit
I/we will be more than happy yo get our 200 free dollars.
As we drive very little we will certainly come out ahead.
And the lower income tax will be a bonus.
Larry confusingly says..
"As for you people discussing ginseng. Shows you how little you know about your own country, you must be from Toronto."
How so to both?
I simply said Ginseng is the second largest cash crop in BC after pot, which it is.
So what if Ontario also grows Ginseng?
The discussion here is about a carbon tax, and BC is the only part of Canada about to have one.
We already have a labour shortage that will continue to get worse for the next few years.

So it affects BC farmers, not Ontario's
