Does Earth Hour actually help the environment? Fri, March 25, 2011
Do you plan on sitting in the dark this Saturday night?
Around the world, people will make the symbolic gesture of showing they support a cleaner world and lower-carbon lifestyle by raising their carbon output.
Earth Hour, started in 2007, encourages people to show their support for the planet by turning their lights off and enjoying the world by candlelight. The problem, of course, is for most Canadians that means turning off a low-carbon energy source and burning pure fossil fuels.
The absurdity is likely lost on most professional environmentalists.
Is it too much to hope for some leaders that use their comon sense, are honest and are way too busy doing their job to play games.

Penny,
Check out geothermal plants through google: here is a start. http://www.geo-energy.org/information/plants.asp
Of course, the oil and coal industry doesn't make a dime off these generators. They are very green power plants. There are links at this site to international data and it is interesting and encouraging. Wind and solar power gets a fair amount of press but geothermal energy is abundant year round and the technology exists to tap and store it efficiently. It is also a good place to put all that unwanted lead. Isolate the lead before it hits the the landfills and use it in the tanks as a heat sink to store geothermal energy. It is being done, now.

It's as if nature is saying, here is a power out let. I put it right here out in the open.

I think it does, but what might help even more is if the commercial/business buildings in downtown (Vancouver) would turn off their lights at night. Have on a few lights for security, but there is no need to have on so many lights, for not reason. Some apartment buildings/condo's could also stop having on lights all night. It's too much.

The Super Volcano in Yellowstone Park contains enough thermal energy to satisfy the power needs of the entire N.A. continent. This area is perhaps too volatile to access but there are MANY smaller more stable geo-thermal areas that have not been tapped.

Please specify where I said that.

There is no agreed amount of CO2 that is man made. It ranges from 3% to 12%.So if you take 3 to 12 poeple out of the pool is the pool any better? Your talking about .003% of atmophere gases that is man made.So swimming in in a pool with 88 poeple peeing is cleaner to you while others are vomiting in the pool with mercury from light bulbs, cutting rain forests for boifuel, and starvation of the poor due to increased food and fuel costs? Knee jurk reactions are not the solution they just make things worse. There have been more advances made in cold fusion but instead of real solutions lets worry about .003 CO2.Carbon capture, Carbon Tax,Cap and trade,Increasing nuclear waste, do nothing to help develope energy alternitives.29 million for Albertas new slogan and nothing for cold fusion and geothermal. How many geothermal plants at hot springs around the world compared to new nuclear plants? Say what you want but this is about taking more money from you and me instead of looking at real solutions. The only thing we are missing is unbiased leadership. If you look at the nuclear cycle from mine, storage to reclamation it produces 63 grams per kilowatt/hr. calling this green is just another lie.But you sould be should be acustomed to that by now.

We should have peeing sections in swimming pools too.

Consider this: The make up of our atmosphere:
78% nitrogen
21 % oxeygen
1% other
of the other CO2 makes up 0.037% of the 1%
Paleo-climatologists tell us that the major causes of global warming/cooling, in order of significance are: (1) The massive effects of our sun on the earth and other planets, caused by gravitational and solar radiation; (2) The significant effects caused when the earth's core reversed its north and south poles. Plate tectonics show that the earth has done the reversal 270 times over its life and may be doing so now; (3) the moderating effects caused by the earths oceans, which act as heat and atmospheric gas sinks to mitigate or focus climate change; (4) The relatively minor effects of Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by humans.
I recall early on when this became "mainstream" it was pretty alarming, with all the graphs and doom and gloom and the call to arms. I saw the movies, read the reports and the headlines. Heat waves, intense storms, mild winters, Oh no Global Warming is coming upon us! Every extreme weather related disaster was Global Warming related. Then predictions of hotter summers, milder winters and increased Hurricanes failed to materialize. Then Global Warming faded away and became Climate Change. Then something else came along. The doubters, the skeptics and the deniers! Questions were raised, previous released data analyzed by the other side. Hadn't they heard that the debate was over. The infamous hockey stick graph suddenly disappeared from the IPCC study. Errors in NASA report reveals the Hottest decade in the US was the 1930's, not the 1990's. Still others point to the Heavens, it's the Sun I tell you, it's the Sun.
Public opinion does not define science nor does public opinion define fact. Have you ever noticed that every few years the "scientific community" publishes yet another Doomsday Scenario, Global Cooling, Nuclear Winter, Peak Oil, Acid Rain, Anthropomorphic Warming etc, etc. Why is it these scientists never discover any problem that doesn't require a socialist remedy? What will they do about "Continental Drift"?
When Al Gore left the White House in 2000, his net worth was $2 million dollars. Now, his net worth is estimated at over $100 million. Global Warming appears to have been very lucrative to Gore. The income tax was introduced in the early 1900's, initially a temporary tax to help fund WWI. Of course it's still here,(income tax) and it's not going away anytime soon or maybe it will, to be replaced by the Carbon Footprint Tax.
Recently I read some interesting articles regarding Climate change. According to recent data from NASA's AQUA satellite indicate that climate models that project rising temperatures due to increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are wrong. The data shows that over the last decade temperatures have at least plateaued since 2002 and if you go back to 1998 have in fact decreased. The head of the IPCC has even acknowledged that temperatures have decreased. So if carbon dioxide is the driver for increased temperatures as claimed by the Global Warming crowd, why is it (temperature) decreasing while the carbon dioxide continues to rise? The IPCC has suggested natural factors are compensating but isn't this what the skeptics claim has caused the recent rising temperatures?
The other article I read reported that some 3000 buoys that have been deployed for the last 5 years to monitor and record ocean temperatures at various depths and when reaching the surface transmit their records back to the mainland show an actual slight cooling. So once again we have climate models that use rising ocean temperatures to project doom and gloom are in fact wrong.
On the other hand, Russian scientist Khabibullo Abdusamatov claims the Earth is possibly heading toward a Global Cooling in coming decades, much like what was experienced during what is commonly referred as the Little Ice Age a few centuries ago.

I dont know how we did it but we seem to have poluted mars also as the temp is rising there might just be the sun is a little hotter
