What a message this sends.......both about our judicial system and sense of priorities. Criminals do what ever you want in other countries, whine and cry and as long as you get someone to champion your plight in the media, the government will free you at public expense.

With all the real priorities in this country; run away fuel prices, soaring food prices, an economy that may or may not end in the toilet.... the list goes on. Lets spend money on releasing a criminal who was convicted in a court of law before she can serve her sentence.....

You people are heartless idiots who know nothing of how corrupt the Mexican system is. I wonder if you'd be so damning if it was your daughter sitting in a Mexican hell hole for two years. Think about that next time you book a week in Mexico.

There are to many people like Brenda Martin looking for a feel ride.

She knew what she was getting into in Mexico and they got it right, she is guilty and should do her time.

I understand she has not paid Canadian or Mexican taxes for nine years while in Mexico.

She is a leach and possibly always will be.

The next step for her is social welfare "keep the money coming in".
Don't, 2008-05-10 07:20:29

Fact is, she was found guilty by the Mexican courts. I see no reason why Canada, or more accurately the Canadian taxpayer, should have had to foot the bill to bring her back.

Travellers are always warned about the consequences of committing crimes abroad - what makes this woman so special?

I am happy Brenda Martin is back in Canada. We all make mistakes and need to be given a second chance. Guilty or not guilty in our eyes means ntothing as she has to face someone more powerful than me some day. I would rather spend 5 years in a Canadian prison than one day in a foreign prison especially in hot countries of the world where there is so much corruption amongst the people who should be protecting the guilty and innocent. Thank God for Canada. Flora Thompson

I'm still not clear why this woman got special treatment. I'm sorry but we shouldn't be going through this much trouble simply because someone can't handle what they got themself into. 82 thousand? Come on. And, have we now set a standard that every person who is convicted of a crime in another counrty will be give the same treatment? Everyone will expect entradition home. I also agree with another commenter, that Ms. Martin should start paying back the money used to get her here. I don't know how she can even hold her head up right now. She obviously hasn't contributed to the Canadian economy in the last two years and seems to think this is something she was owed. Funny how this woman was perfectly fine in jail in Mexico for over two years had all this hub bub surround her and this government money thrown at her, yet a man with a life threatening condition who needed specific medication that he couldn't afford anymore wasn't even a blip on the government's radar. Priorities?

Congratulatins to the media. Once again they get their hearts & flowers story, at the expense of taxpayers. Why do we bother with courts, when the media does a much better job of determining guilt or innocence.
Kama, 2008-05-10 06:56:26

At a time when we refuse medication to help sick people we now spent this amoun of money on a woman that another government has found guilty of a crime

Unbelievable
John Rodgers, 2008-05-10 06:43:00

I am really glad we helped her and I think we should see if there are any other innocent people that need help.

All the money we spend on other foolish things I feel at least we have something to show for the expense. We saved a persons life. Have a good day.
Lana Geddes, 2008-05-10 06:37:56

There are many discount airlines that should/could have been used to fly her back. Leave it up to our incompetent government to spent a hundred times more to fly her back. Don't forget to pay your taxes folks!
