well if she is guilty and from what i heard its cause she accepted severance pay from her employer of $26,000 and they say she knew those funds came from illegal activity, then my question is that this guy had a house in puerto vallarta valued at $ 3.5 million dollars and that house is now the property of this mans lawyer ( a mexican lawyer) in exchange for lawyers fees, so my question is why is this lawyer not in jail in mexico he obviously knows that house is a product of ilegel activity, just doesnt seem fair now does it !!!!

Whenever travelling to a foreign country one must keep their noses clean and be subject to the laws of that country.I'm sure if she had'nt accepted the money(which was a little much for severance pay)and just gotten on the next plane home she would'nt be in this mess..

However I believe this woman to be innocent or ignorant at best and does'nt deserve 7 years in jail. Bring her back!!

Does the two years she has already served count towards her five year sentence?
Jason Melzer, 2008-04-22 17:28:17

I definitely sympathize and truly feel sad for Ms. Martin.

However, all that we know is that Ms. Martin says she is innocent. We do not know the evidence against her. We do not know all of the details. Having spent two years in prison while awaiting a verdict is another story in itself. Lets just hope she will get stronger once she is back in Canada.

I may have to stop buying Corona.

I am not sure why our government is considering bringing this woman back to Canada to serve her time. Are people no longer responsible for their actions in other jurisdictions ? Wether we believe she is guilty or not does not matter, she was found guilty and she should have to serve out her sentence in the juridiction where the crime was commited. Why should Canadians have to pay to have this woman serve her time here. As the old saying goes " do the crime, do the time".

OMG who cares about this?! Harpers attending an SPP summit in New Orleans selling out our sovereignty and you're still talking about this ugly old 'prisoner' who strangely enough is allowed to wear gold earrings in prison? Give me a break Canoe. You should just be done with it and drop the word 'news' from your website. This most certainly isn't news.

It's interesting to compare how people reacted to Conrad Black (a Canadian) being sent to jail in the U.S. Many were happy. Got what he deserved.

But now when Brenda Martin gets sent to jail in a another country, everyone is all upset and hand wringing.

Just because she is always blubbering on camera, while Black remained stoic, does not change either of their being found guilty in the country where the crime was committed, by that country's legal system.

I am disgusted with the guilty verdict based on the reason that she knew (in the judges opinion) that her boss was involved in an illegal scam. I was in shock when I read the verdict and hope that she is brought home soon.
Joanne, 2008-04-22 17:00:57

wow a first I'm in agreement with WCL, Martin got herself in this mess in the first place. I was not privy to the evidence against her, however the judge was and he felt she was guilty.

I for one love mexico and their people, the legal system is a bit questionable at best.

That said; I am very much looking forward to my next visit and will continue to be suspect of many of the "in-country deals".

Shes in a foreign contry for pete's sake, it pays to be wary
