Does American protectionism pose a threat to Canada?
Thu, January 29, 2009

Canadian steel producers and builders say they have "grave concerns" about a U.S. proposal that would call on major public works projects to favour U.S. steel over imported metal.

You are confusing the evils of consumerism with capitalism. Capitalism, as an economic mechanisim to generate wealth, is not inherently evil. The evil would lie with the individual on how he/she creates wealth. For example, inventing a medical instrument and taking it to market is not neccessarily evil. In fact, Capitalism spurs innovation because successful risk takers may reap a reward.

Greed will raise its ugly head in ANY system, as will corruption and foolishness. Consumerism is a child of the wealth generated by Capitalism but it need not be. Again, it is individuals allowing themselves to be influenced by marketers that waste wealth and create ecological mayhem by running around and buying things they don't need.

What would you suggest is a better system Jay? Instead of constantly complaining how about solutions which reveal what you believe is a better system. Its easy to sit back and criticize, however it is a lot harder to present solutions.

Capitalism may not be the best system, but I have yet to see one that is better than it. Flame away fence sitter.

In my 'opinion' the US acts as the cultural center for capitalism and its associated lifestyle and is, by extension, one of the biggest threats to the future of the human race and the wellbeing of our planets ecosystems.

But most people like themselves, their double lattes and their pickup trucks too much to care.

Could you explain what the US of V is please? I don't think this country has anything to do with American protectionism. Perhaps you need to stop watching so much tv.

I know for a FACT that Canadian businesses think otherwise, your opinion is useless as usual. On the Monty rap again, what next here it comes Harper is an American right?

NtD AKA SAF says..

"It did, but we just signed a new trade deal with the U.S. that addresses most of the issues."

Its a temporary deal on something that is due to expire very soon.Hardly a big deal. Then again NtD AKA SAF thought Monty had been charged

EH?

paul seems to think that the fact the U.S of V CONtrols the Canadian economy does not = America being a threat to Canada.

Odd

That has to be the most moronic comment you have ever posted old hag. You have said the Americans control our country already so they aren't really a threat now are they?

Completely wrong, protectionism is the number one concern of Canada's, our economy is intrinsically linked to the United States. When they throw up barriers to companies in Canada, HHHHMMMMM these companies lay off people. Perhaps you missed CTV news where a B.C. company was profiled. They have been hurt financially because of barriers placed by the U.S.

THEN AGAIN, WHY DO I BOTHER, YOUR TOO BLINDED BY HATRED TO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CANADIAN AMERICAN RELATIONSHIP.
