I too have brother that bounces between rehab and a world of drug and alcohol abuse. This last time, number 9, I walked away. I've spent my retirement money on this facilities like Edgewood in Nanaimo. I don't blame them for his inability to stay clean as the fault lays right at my brother's feet and no one elses. I just hate it when people stand up and shout that we need to fix these people's problems. In some cases we can't. They simply like there state and don't want to fix it. In a case like that we need to stand aside and let them be. in this case I think doing a makeover does nothing to solve anything. its a waste of time and people had best get with the program. Leave the bums alone until they want to be fixed.

Dave,

The boot camp would be part of the addiction addressing. Yes the problem does not go away unless treated. That said part of the treatment is to keep them away from the stuff and to offer them dignity.

I hve pulled one cousin out of the gutter twice. this time around I forced him in to a treatment centre.

Last week when I saw him he has put on 20lbs. He gave me a hug and thanked me again for the push.

We are really hoping this is the last time he needs his addiciton (to cocaine) fixed.

Otherwise he will end on the streets and not end up on the streets again.

This won't solve the problem by itself, but what it does is shine a very bright spotlight on the problem. It also helps combat many of the assumptions we make about the homeless, including they're there because they're lazy, or shiftless, and that they never amounted to much to begin with.

Every time you see a homeless person, remember that but for the grace of god (and some luck), that could be you. We've all been faced with various choices, when it comes to alcohol and drugs. Some of us made the right choices. Some did not. Some of those who made the wrong choice, were lucky and did not get addicted. Others weren't so lucky. So Spare some sympathy and concern for those who weren't as lucky as you.

By the way, Bucadogg, the problem with a boot camp is it works only for as long as the person is in the boot camp. Unless you deal with the addiction and other issues, the person simply reverts back to previous behavior on release. That also applies to jails and inmates.

This won't solve the problem and is sensationalism.

If our society had it right the homeless (especially addcits/drunks) should be at boot camps that offer daily work and food geared towards breaking the habits.

Spotlighting one person will not help the situation.

If all the support agencies got to toghther with a plan to engage the problem with some discipline then maybe the success rate would rise.
