PORTLAND, Maine - Voters in the northeastern state of Maine repealed a state law that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed, dealing the gay rights movement a heartbreaking defeat in the corner of the country most supportive of gay marriage.
Gay marriage has now lost in every single state - 31 in all - in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine - known for its moderate, independent-minded electorate - and mounted an energetic, well-financed campaign.

While Jay ponders that I will toss my two cents in. Catholicism has apparently outgrown that behaviour. The Inquisition, burning witches at the stake, burning or hoarding books, (the Vatican Library has many first copies of books decreed blasphemous, many scientific in nature) and assassinations, excommunication or perpetual arrest WAS JUST A PHASE. That doesn't make its many, many thousands of victims any less victimized. The Church moved on to more insidious mayhem but got caught again, literally, with their pants down. The Church has been just a TAD destructive to many cultures cutting a wide, bleak swath through those cultures that would resist its "teachings".
It might be fair to say that all organized religions are simply an end run around our innate fear of death and use that fear to grasp power. A picture of a stick, a carrot, and a donkey comes to mind.

- Leave it to the Christians to teach tolerance. See, we all have the potential to be extremist as the muslims we're all out to get.

I am prpared to tolerate same sex unions but am under no obligation to "support" same sex marriages.
I WOULD MAKE ONE EXCEPTION...I SUPPORT and encourage Twitless to enter into a same sex marriage in the knowledge that we would not then ever have to worry about IT breeding.

Who wants to be married if raising kids is not your goal, besides who hasn't seen the domestic divorce squabbles, settlement split, custody etc.
Just use condoms ,we have 6 billion peole now why continue? Diversity of genes? Our fecund rate is absurd in this century of possiblily a high survival rate at birth, extend the health /age expectancy to the whole globe. Just athought.
Marriage is not a revered institution by all.
