What do think of social networking? Mon, February 1, 2010
TORONTO - Little or no grammar teaching, cellphone texting, social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, all are being blamed for an increasingly unacceptable number of post-secondary students who can't write properly.
For years there's been a flood of anecdotal complaints from professors about what they say is the wretched state of English grammar coming from some of their students.
Facebook is probably the biggest time-waster in North America today.
Texting shows how something that has limited usefulness can get so out of control that whole generations of phones come with keypads now so it's easier to send 100 useless texts per day, when 2 texts and 3 actuall calls were all that was required.
Twitter is a representation oh how many people consider themselves to be sooo self-important that others, even strangers would be interested in their trivial day to day activities.
They are all indications of how self-important people in modern society feel.
But if you want to get to the bottom of bad grammer, look at what and how they are teaching english and grammer in school (do they even teach grammer anymore, certainly spelling went out many yeara ago)

A sub standard system employing sub standard employees producing sub standard students.
Hmmm, I think there's a pattern in there, lol!
It's got NOTHING to do with facebook/twitter/etc, they blow for other reasons.
ROFL!

I think chatting, facebook, myspace, etc. don't have full credit for kids having bad grammar, but on the other hand it does have some. In school, we're not allowed to go on those websites, so the kids should be getting a good education and being able to pay attention. But once school is over, they forget all about the information and things they were taught. The kids are so bored of school, so they go straight to the computer. On the computer they of course go to the chatting websites they're used to. On those websites, I'm pretty sure they don't want to sound professional, instead they want to sound cool. In kids worlds, sounding cool is using slang words and short sentences. They get used to using that type of grammar, because they spend more time on the computer then they do listening to what the grammar teacher has to say. That's what I think about the articles point.

I don't think that is true from where I live, because where I live most people instant message and other stuff and still know how to type aproppriatly. Like me, when I instant message I don't have to type the correct way, but in school I type or write the correct way. But what I really think is it just depends on the person or which school they're in.

I think it depends on the person, some people can chat online & still get their work done. Others are just straight up lazy, it depends on the person's work ethic, because i can play around online & still get my stuff done on time, other days i feel like I can sleep through the week, if a person gets a failing grade, it's their own fault regardless of whether they were chatting/texting. i think it's okay as long as you do it at the right place & the right time.

I don't think texting, or other social networking sites let kids be bad at grammar because they are not supposed to be using them in school. It is their fault for not paying attention in class.

I think that twitter, texting, etc. are not the reasons people are having issues with grammar. The reason is prbobly because they don't have their heads stuck in the game. Such as not paying attention in class and not doing their homework.

I think that social networking is making some good minds go blank. Some brilliant students are starting to lose how to write correct grammar. People don't understand because they just don't get how to ask the teacher for help. The students slack off and they just write anything on a piece of paper. Those are the reasons why students are failing.

I think they should just teach all the students who can't write. They should teach them more in K-12 instead of waiting on collage. I think social networking sites are ruining their grammar. The students write a lot, but they're speaking IM. They aren't learning a lot from "OMG" or "LOL." Parents should help, too. The parents should ban their kids from social networking for awhile so they could work on their grammar.

Why are they blaming cellphones, facebook, and twitter? Do you have any proof that these are the problems. What if they didn't use any of these? They don't have any actual proof that those kids were using any of those.
