WINNIPEG -- A Winnipeg man who plied his teenage daughter with booze and then took pornographic pictures of her has been sentenced to three years in prison.

The 42-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his now 17-year-old daughter, pleaded guilty to one count of producing child pornography.

"The charge is almost unfathomable, unimaginable, in terms of the breach of trust," said Judge Fred Sandhu yesterday.

Court heard the victim was approaching her 16th birthday in the summer of 2007 when her father gave her alcohol and then filmed her in what Crown attorney Terry McComb described as "youthful play."

The poses became more "provocative" and the man filmed the victim "playing around" with another girl, McComb said.

The following month the man took more pictures of his daughter, fully clothed, but in "sexually provocative positions," McComb said.

On another occasion the man convinced his daughter to "chug" several ounces of whiskey and then showed her pictures from a pornographic website featuring teenagers.

Days later the man coerced the girl into "chugging" beer and exposed her to more Internet pornography and "teen modelling sites," telling the girl she could earn as much as $500 a picture on such sites.

The man then pulled out a form-fitting zebra print dress, told the girl to put it on and proceeded to take several "extremely intimate and graphic pictures." Fearing for her safety, the girl told her father she was going to the kitchen to get more beer and then ran to a neighbour's house and called police.

The man has a lengthy criminal record, including a conviction for assaulting the girl when she was eight years old.

"(The victim) said she did what her father wanted because she was afraid of his temper," McComb said.

The man also pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching a recognizance after he defied a court order he not contact the girl and lied about where he was living.

Defence lawyer Dan Manning said his client does not have pedophiliac tendencies and can't explain why he took the pictures. He said the man's actions have cost him everything.

The victim, her mother, and other family members were present in court for the sentencing. The man apologized for his crimes.

Sandhu credited the man 30 months for time served, reducing his remaining sentence to six months.

Sandhu ordered that the man's name be included on the national sex offender registry for 20 years and that he not be allowed to attend parks, pools or playgrounds where children are present for the next five years.
