TORONTO -- A Wisconsin man's unorthodox hunting technique, which had him combine a firearm and powerboat engine propeller to take down a deer, earned him 10 days in a Northern Ontario jail.
Philip Borofka, 56, was sentenced to jail in addition to more than $10,000 in fines in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora, on March 5.
Borofka was also suspended from hunting in Ontario for seven years. The boat, owned by a third party, and Borofka's firearm were to be returned once the fines are paid.
Conservation officers say a hunting party forced a deer from Cochrane Island into the waters of Lake of the Woods on Oct. 20, 2008. They say Borofka shot at the swimming deer, ran over it in the boat and then shot it again.
Borofka told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the charges are "exaggerated" and "absurd."
