Slain man had $238,000 in life insurance
The Toronto Sun

TORONTO -- An accused killer missed her boyfriend's funeral but tried collecting his life insurance policy four days after discovering his bludgeoned body in her bed, court heard yesterday.

Nicola "Nicky" Puddicombe was the sole beneficiary of slain transit officer Dennis Hoy's $238,200 life insurance policy and his pension proceeds when she phoned his employer on Oct. 31, 2006, a GO Transit official testified.

Hoy had marked Puddicombe as the beneficiary of both benefits in September 2003 when he was promoted to full-time constable, Sheryl Jackman, a GO human resources manager, told court.

Puddicombe's lesbian lover, Ashleigh Pechaluk, 24, is on trial for first-degree murder for allegedly bludgeoning Hoy with an axe on Oct. 27, 2006. She has plead not guilty.

The prosecution is alleging Pechaluk and Puddicombe were involved in the planned slaying of Hoy, 36, who was Puddicombe's boyfriend for 11 years, so that the lesbians could share a life together.

The prosecution is alleging Puddicombe -- who will go on trial after Pechaluk -- was motivated by greed, namely his insurance proceeds.

Jackman said Puddicombe contacted GO Transit, inquiring about Hoy's life insurance policy -- he had signed up for triple extra coverage on top of his basic policy.

"She found his body. She was upset and she had to clear out his apartment" recalled Jackman from her meeting with Puddicombe, now 36.

Puddicombe never received the insurance proceeds but did pick up the $20,000 in lump-sum pension payments, Jackman said.

"She missed the funeral because she asked the detectives to let her know (its time) and they didn't," Jackman recalled Puddicombe informing her.

The trial resumes today.
