TORONTO -- Police in the GTA arrested 22 people and dismantled an alleged organized crime group that targeted South Asian homeowners for gold, cash, electronic equipment and passports.

The four-month long Project Dish found some robbers worked as a team when they broke into a home.

Police, who were still recovering and sorting stolen items yesterday, didn't comment on the investigation. More information was expected today, police spokesman Mark Pugash said.

The victims lived throughout the area including York, Peel, Durham, Halton and Toronto. The stolen jewelry was allegedly sold to Ashok Jewellers and Dubai Jewellers on Gerrard St. near Main St., police said

The robbers often broke into homes by kicking open front doors, ignoring alarms and dogs. But they were sometimes scared off when they found people at home.

At other times, police said, the thieves got into homes by asking for a person or pretending they were selling something.
