FORTHTON -- Ontario Provincial Police officers shot and killed a man near here Friday night after he reportedly struck an officer with his pickup truck.
Two police officers suffered minor injuries in the incident, which resulted from a chase after the man bolted from a routine check for impaired drivers, police said.
The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the incident.
Officers from the OPP's Leeds County detachment, as well as the force's Highway Enforcement Team (HET), were conducting a RIDE program on the Highway 401 off-ramp at County Road 29 in Brockville around 11 p.m. Friday, the OPP said in a press release.
A pickup truck approached the RIDE check after leaving the 401, police said, adding the adult male driver spoke to an officer and then fled the scene.
Officers followed the fleeing suspect north on County Road 29 and "attempted to stop the suspect vehicle by blocking it in," adds the statement.
"The suspect vehicle and police units collided. An officer was struck. Shots were fired striking the adult male suspect. He was pronounced deceased at the scene," the OPP said.
Two officers were taken to Brockville General Hospital "for treatment of injuries," police added.
"They were treated at hospital and released with minor injuries," OPP spokesman Sgt. Kristine Rae said Saturday.
Rae said she was unable to discuss the specifics of the incident, which is now in the hands of the SIU.
She was also unable to provide any details about the deceased.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates incidents involving serious injuries or deaths involving police.
A separate press release by that agency specifies that the officers tried to block the truck in the Forthton area, 14 kilometres north of Brockville.
The OPP's attempt to block the fleeing suspect "resulted in a collision between the truck and OPP vehicles," according to the SIU.
"Officers interacted with the driver and at some point the truck struck an officer. Two officers discharged their firearms and the driver was struck at least once. The male was pronounced dead at the scene," the SIU statement adds.
Eight SIU investigators, including three forensic investigators, were probing the circumstances surrounding the incident Saturday. Officers had closed off the scene and were still investigating early Saturday evening.
The SIU is appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to call them at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 1965.
SIU officials could not be reached for comment Saturday.
