CALGARY -- Norman Eli Larue, a convicted sex offender recently released into Calgary, was arrested by Mounties in Strathmore yesterday for a murder in Whitehorse, Sun sources say.

Larue, a high-risk offender who was released from Bowden after serving a 51/2-year prison term for crimes including aggravated sex assault, theft, and flight from police, has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of 63-year-old Gordon Seybold.

Seybold's burned body was found after a fire in his home March 26, 2008.

Following a 16-month investigation by Mounties and police in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary, Strathmore RCMP and Yukon major crimes unit yesterday arrested Larue and a 31-year-old Yukon woman in the town 50 km east of Calgary.

Larue, who is originally from Kamloops, B.C., has also been charged with arson in connection with the crime.

Last week, Calgary police issued a warning about Larue's release because of his history of sexual violent crimes that happened in Kamloops between 2001 and 2003.

Larue was serving part of his sentence in a Vancouver halfway house, from which he twice walked away.

In September 2007, he was wanted for breach of parole after leaving the halfway house, but turned himself in days later. He disappeared from the halfway house again in January 2008.

Both suspects will appear in court today and return to the Yukon for their further appearances.

Whitehorse RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers could not say whether the two suspects both arrested in Strathmore were known to each other or to Seybold.

The woman is known to police in Yukon, he said.
