Pedophile open to chemical castration

BELLEVILLE, Ont. -- A 54-year-old convicted pedophile and Thurlow native has indicated he is willing to undergo operations to help him decrease his sexual desires following guilty pleas to sexually abusing young girls in Kitchener.

Terrance Madden, who left Belleville three years ago after a local radio station's exposé into his public dating activities, was facing 18 sex-related charges dating back to June 2007. Madden pleaded guilty to five counts.

Assistant Crown attorney Melissa Ernewein told The Intelligencer Madden's lawyer, during court proceedings last week, indicated Madden is willing to have surgery to deal with his pedophilia.

"His lawyer in court was rather coy about it and she referred to surgery he'd be willing to undergo," Ernewein said.

It is possible he may voluntarily agree to chemical castration.

The man who once lived in Thurlow and whose mother and father still live in Belleville, pleaded guilty to two counts of making child pornography, sexually assaulting two girls and disobeying a court order.

The girls were eight and 10 at the time.

Madden, who has 23 other convictions for sex offences dating back to 1976, may be added to the dangerous offender list if the Crown gets its way.

"It's ultimately the Office of the Attorney General that makes that decision, but at this point we are intending to ask the court to make an assessment order which is the first stage of a dangerous offender application," Ernewein said. "As with any case, we look at present offences as well as prior convictions when considering an application."

Reached by telephone for comment, a woman, who confirmed she is Madden's mother, would not answer questions from an Intelligencer reporter.

"I don't want to talk to you about this. I'd rather not talk about it. Thank you," the woman said before hanging up.

Madden was arrested in July 2008 at his Kitchener home after a three-month investigation into allegations made by someone within his home to Waterloo Regional Police.

At that time, officers seized a laptop computer and several digital storage devices, including a hard drive, from a Kitchener townhouse. Police said they found worrisome images on the computer, including photos showing at least one young girl engaged in sexual acts.

In February 2006, Madden was exposed by Belleville radio station Mix 97 FM after he put himself up for auction during a charity Valentine bachelor auction. Shortly after he was exposed, he relocated to the London area.

Ernewein said Madden is scheduled back in court Thursday to pick a date to submit more evidence on the guilty plea.
