EDMONTON -- A Camrose man accused of robbing a drugstore and later forcing police into a daylong standoff is recovering in hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest.
No one else was injured.
The man shot himself once with a handgun in his home near 42 Avenue and 58 Street in Camrose at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday, said Camrose Police Insp. Lee Foreman.
He was treated by EMS stationed nearby and taken to hospital in Camrose.
The gunman allegedly robbed a Shoppers Drug Mart in Camrose at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, said Foreman.
A man threatened a drugstore clerk, saying he had a gun in his pocket. He demanded narcotics, and made off with a small amount, said Foreman.
Camrose police identified a suspect and got a warrant that night, and soon found out where he lived.
Foreman said the suspect was known to police before the standoff.
By 8:30 a.m. yesterday, cops confirmed the man was in his home. The suspect has several guns registered to him.
Cops surrounded the residence and called in the RCMP Emergency Response Team.
Neighbours were evacuated.
Just before noon yesterday, after ERT arrived, several shots were fired from inside the house.
Police did not fire any shots during the standoff, said Foreman.
Negotiators tried to get the suspect -- the lone occupant of the home -- out of the house without harm, he said.
Charles Daniel Nadeau, 31, is facing charges for the standoff and the robbery.
