Who's torching Montreal's Italian cafes?

MONTREAL — Who’s been firebombing all those Italian coffee shops in Montreal?

Police are stumped — and the victims aren’t talking.

At least five bars have been hit by Molotov cocktails in less than a month.

The head of the Montreal police arson squad says inquiries have met with resounding silence from the victims. Cafe owners haven’t been forthcoming with information.

Nobody has been harmed by the attacks, which have been occurring overnight.

Cmdr. Robert Quevillon says police aren’t ruling out any hypothesis — including a Mafia turf war, or a brazen street gang trying to take over the Mob’s turf.

An association that represents bar, pub and tavern owners in Quebec says bar managers have to come forward and work with police.

Association president Renaud Poulin says that silence would reflect poorly on these establishments, and that he’s working to improve communication between police and bar managers.
