Neo-Nazis suspected in failed bombing

Infighting between associates of a neo-Nazi group might have led to the detonation of two homemade bombs at a Calgary apartment, cops say.

About 7:15 a.m. Saturday, cops were called to a housing complex in the 5300 block of Rundlehorn Dr. N.E. following a complaint of gunshots.

They discovered the remnants of two bombs that had exploded after a man staying in the targeted, ground-floor apartment threw them off the patio into the parking lot in the nick of time.

"The persons would have been killed had the device not been thrown from the residence," said Staff Sgt. Keith Cain. Police are now looking for Kyle Robert McKee, 24, as well as a 17-year-old youth, who can't be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Cops confirm both are affiliated with the Aryan Guard, a white supremacist group, and say McKee, who is known to them, could pose further threat to the public.

"We're very concerned about locating him as soon as possible," said Cain, adding McKee may have left town, but police have no reason to believe he has.

About 70 residents in neighbouring suites at the complex, Pineridge Greene Apartments, were evacuated after the bombs went off on Saturday, damaging at least one car in the parking lot, but failing to injure any people.

The woman who lives in the targeted apartment knows both of the suspects and said McKee's best friend had been aggressively pursuing her.

"He's been stalking me. I told him to leave me alone, I don't like him," said the woman, who didn't want her identity revealed.

Telling him off might have led to the attack, she said.

The 29-year-old woman, who plans to move out of the complex today because of the incident, said she heard noises on her balcony Saturday morning and allegedly found McKee lighting what she says were pipe bombs -- one at her door and the other at her bedroom window.

A male friend who had been staying with her for about a week -- allegedly as protection from McKee's friend -- acted quickly, chucking the bombs away from the apartment and likely saving their lives.

Police say both she and the man staying with her are also linked with the Aryan Guard.

Police say the incident is not a hate-crime, nor is it gang-related.

McKee is described as white, 5-ft.-9, 140 lbs., with a slim build. He has blue eyes and a shaved head.

Both he and the 17-year-old are wanted on warrants for attempted murder, possessing, making or controlling explosives and possession of a weapon or imitation for a dangerous purpose.
