Robbers agree to max youth sentence
By DEAN PRITCHARD, SUN MEDIA
The Winnipeg Sun

WINNIPEG -- Two teens who took part in a violent one-hour robbery spree and then beat another man when they were released on bail have agreed to receive the maximum youth sentence of three years custody and community supervision.

But they still have to wait for a judge to endorse the sentence, jointly recommended by the Crown and defence.

The now 18-year-old man and 16-year-old boy were among a pack of four youths and one adult male who committed three separate robberies in the span of one hour on Oct. 18, 2008, culminating in the serious beating of two men walking along River Avenue with a case of beer.

One victim had an eyelid sliced open after being beaten in the head with a beer bottle, while the other suffered several broken teeth and other injuries. Both victims underwent plastic surgery.

Earlier in the evening the gang robbed two young men waiting at a Stradbrook Avenue bus stop of their wallets and MP3 players, and punched one of the victims in the face.

Thirty minutes later, the gang -- now armed with sticks and rocks -- attacked a small group of people drinking beer in a park. The two accused were arrested and later released on bail.

Last July, they were among a group of males who attacked a 45-year-old man as he was walking with his son underneath the Osborne Street bridge. The man suffered three broken ribs and cuts and bruises to his head and face.

Neither accused had a prior criminal record. Crown attorney Lisa Carson said she would have sought to sentence the two accused as adults had they not agreed to the plea bargain. Judge Rocky Pollack adjourned sentencing to later this month.

The lone adult accused, 21-year-old Alexander Smith, was previously sentenced to one year in jail. A 17-year-old co-accused was sentenced in September to nine months.
