Calgary human-trafficking arrests
The Calgary Sun

CALGARY -- Arrests have been made in a recent human trafficking investigation in Calgary.

A search warrant was done on at least one Calgary location, suspected of being a bawdy house.

It is not known if the accused in the joint RCMP, Canada Border Services and Calgary police investigation are men or women but the victims are said to be young women brought in from outside the country to be exploited in the sex trade.

CBSA and police officials could not be reached for comment.

Earlier this fall, a Hungarian woman trapped into the sex trade after being lured here by a promise of legitimate work spoke at a human-trafficking workshop in Calgary to city police, RCMP, immigration and border officials about the crime and how to better detect it.

Human trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar global industry with victims recruited and exploited for everything from slavery to sexual abuse.

RCMP said some 15,000 people are trafficked through Canada each year.

In September, three women, one from Beijing and two from Fiji, were charged in Edmonton after an investigation into a suspected bawdy house with police saying they rescued three women from "modern-day slavery."

No other details were available about the Calgary investigation.
