Woman's good intentions led to murder
Woman found murdered the day after offering man a place to stay for the night
By ROB LAMBERTI, SUN MEDIA
The Toronto Sun

TORONTO -- Spring Phillips offered a man a place to stay at her downtown apartment.

Her good intentions may have resulted in her murder.

The 26-year-old woman was found dead by her boyfriend in her 27th floor Wellesley St. E. apartment Saturday afternoon.

Levi Samuel Aggek, 33, wanted for second-degree murder, was arrested at a Scott's Mission shelter on Geary Ave. at 7:14 last night.

He was arrested without incident while he was in the lobby waiting for a bed. A staff member recognized him and called police.

Surveillance cameras captured the suspect leaving the building, according to investigators.

He didn't seem anxious or nervous as he left the building. Indeed, it appears the man stops to pick up something off the floor, possibly a cigarette butt.

Police said the suspect was to stay overnight at the dead woman's apartment Friday and she was last seen alive by friends at around 11:30 that night.

Toronto homicide Det. Hank Idsinga said she was killed sometime between 12:30 and 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Neighbours heard yells but didn't call police.

The mother of a three-year-old girl, who lives with the birth father's family, apparently died of blunt force trauma but an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

"It's a pretty violent scene," Idsinga said of the apartment, which he described as being bloody.

He said he doesn't have any indication of a motive or what kind of weapon was used to kill Phillips.

The suspect, originally from the East Coast, moved to the Toronto area a few months ago and has been regularly staying at shelters, Idsinga said.

The suspect met Phillips through mutual friends. A group of people were at her apartment on Friday, and they left around 11:30 p.m. The man was allowed to stay the night, Idsinga said.

Homicide detectives still want to speak with witnesses and ask they call 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.
