SARNIA, Ont. - Local border guards are being hailed by the federal Minister of Public Safety for seizing almost 50 kilograms of cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge on Friday.
In announcing the bust Wednesday, Peter Van Loan said the drugs have a street value of $6.25 million.
Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers stopped a tractor trailer attempting to enter Canada with a load of electronics at 6:40 a.m.
Using a mobile cargo inspection system they discovered 50 bricks of suspected cocaine in two boxes.
A 26-year-old Brampton man was arrested by officers and charged by the RCMP for importing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The investigation is ongoing.
"I congratulate the outstanding work of border services officers in preventing 50 kilograms of cocaine from reaching our streets," Van Loan said.
"This government acknowledges that the smuggling of drugs and guns across our border fuels organized crime in Canada, and is committed to giving law enforcement the tools they need to make our communities safe."
Since January of 2007, CBSA officers in the Windsor-St. Clair Region have seized about 1.25 tonnes of cocaine.
