CALGARY -- City police spent yesterday questioning the son of a man killed in his northeast home, the victim of what police call a domestic attack.

After more than 24 hours of searching for Harinder Singh's son Ranjit -- who they called a person of interest -- cops picked up the 30-year-old in Kingsland late Tuesday.

Homicide Staff Sgt. Rick Tuza said they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the investigation and no charges have been laid.

"We need to do some more work," he said yesterday.

By law, anyone brought in for questioning has to be released within 24 hours if charges aren't laid.

Singh was left clinging to life in his Castleridge home early Monday, dying later the same day.

Police have said people in the home say no one saw Singh being attacked.

Friends of the dead man are shocked by Calgary's 26th homicide this year.

Joginder Sandhu hoped he might offer some help when he went to his friend's home yesterday, but the family wasn't there.

"I'd like to give support," he said.

"But what kind of support can I give -- he's gone."

Sandhu, who worked with the elder Singh at CP Rail, said his friend's family was picture-perfect. "Honestly, they are just a wonderful family," he said.

"If someone's sick or in an accident that's something, but this is something else -- it's unbelievable, it's really sad."

Kartar Bhatia said Singh "was an excellent man, a very nice person," he said.

"We are just shocked."

Neighbour Diamond Dadani said Singh was married with two grown sons and a daughter, a hard-working man who owned two fast-food restaurants and the patriarch of a wonderful family.

"He was happy," he said, wiping away tears.

"He was a good man."

About one-third of all homicides are domestic.
