Police say it’s sheer luck only one person suffered minor injuries when bullets were sprayed on the doorway and facade of an Edmonton nightclub early Saturday morning.
“Probably through more luck than anything, no one was shot,” said Staff Sgt. Ian McKnight.
One person was struck by flying glass.
Cops responded to the Blush Innovative Kitchen and Lounge, 2940 Calgary Tr., at 1:27 a.m. after several reports of gunshots.
Police learned a group had been kicked out of the club after a skirmish, said McKnight.
Soon after, someone or some group fired several bullets at the front of the club from the parking lot.
Shots punched holes through the metal door frame. The glass doors were shattered.
One bullet punctured the back of a bench seat inside the club.
There were at least two bullet holes on the outside wall of the club, metres from the doors.
The club was open during the gunplay, and several people were in the entrance area, said McKnight.
It’s not yet known how many or what type of weapon was used.
Forensic officers have recovered shell casings from the scene.
The investigation continues.
Saturday’s shooting adds to a spat of gunplay at Edmonton nightclubs.
One man was killed and another taken to hospital Feb. 15 after a shooting outside a downtown after-hours club.
At about 8 a.m., police received calls from two individuals who reported hearing gunshots in the area of 105 Street and 100 Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found one male dead in his grey Jeep Liberty parked outside the Twilight after-hours club at 10018 105 St., his bloodied head lying back against the headrest. Music was playing on the stereo and the vehicle was still running.
Another male, also shot, was taken to hospital.
Cops were called to the Gingur Sky lounge, 15505 118 Ave., shortly after 3 a.m. Feb. 14 with reports of shots fired, said Staff Sgt. Blair Edl.
They arrived to find a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her lower leg.
A fight started inside the bar, then spilled into the parking lot, where shots were fired.
Police didn’t find a suspect at the scene, and witnesses were not answering cop questions. Then, at 7:20 a.m., a 21-year-old man stumbled into the Misericordia Hospital with a wound to his leg.
Police are linking the two injuries based on conversations with the victims, said Edl.
