Men shot at Ontario house party

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - A 21-year-old man is facing murder and attempted murder charges after an early morning shooting in Belleville that left one man dead and sent another man to hospital.

Belleville police confirmed Roy Steven Mays, 24, died from injuries he sustained in the shooting.

Justin Steven Coughlin, 19, was taken to hospital for treatment.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning in an apartment building in Belleville, located 200 km east of Toronto. Neighbours said they heard some noise about that time, but noted there was also noise from a party at a nearby residence.

The two men who were shot had attended a party and a witness said another man in his early twenties “went into a bedroom and just came out shooting."

Police were releasing few details. Officers taped off several houses in the neighbourhood.

Family and friends gathered in a home in Read, Ont., but told a QMI Agency reporter they didn't want to talk to the media and needed to come to grips with what had transpired.

A woman, eyes red-rimmed from crying, said family members “went to the hospital, but police aren't telling us anything. They won't even let us see the body.” Belleville police have charged 21-year-old Myles Hughes with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. He was remanded in custody until a video appearance in Ontario court March 25.

The Belleville area has seen plenty of violence recently.

Last Friday, in nearby Prince Edward Country, Tracy Hannah, 46, and her 14-year-old daughter Whitney were shot to death in their home. A second daughter, Shannon, 18, suffered life-threatening injuries.

Dean Brown, 18, of Belleville, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Other recent killings in the area include

  • Jessica Lloyd, of Belleville, and Marie-France Comeau, of Brighton (both alleged to have been killed by Col. Russell Williams).

  • Robert Vaillancourt, 61, whose body was found on the bank of the Moira River in Belleville on July 23.

  • Steffany Gardiner, 26, of Prince Edward County, whose body was found Sept. 19 at Papineau Lake in North Hastings.

  • Mark Patterson, 38, whose battered body was found Jan. 30., near Rednersville, about eight kilometres from where the Hannah women were discovered last Friday.

  • Lisa-Marie Palmiere, also known as Lisa Todd, 35, who was found dead in a home in Trenton on Feb. 26.
