Delivery men robbed of pizza, dough

OTTAWA -- A pizza shop in Ottawa has had two of their delivery men robbed over two days in the same area.

The first incident happened near Ellis and Lilas privates, a community housing project between Prince Albert St. and Presland Rd., when a pizza guy got his delivery lifted early Saturday. Police said three black men stole the pizza and the bag, along with some cash.

It was minor by comparison to the second heist that happened minutes past midnight Monday about 100 metres east of Ellis at 305 Presland Rd.

The 57-year-old driver was followed into the low-rise apartment complex by two men. One came at him from behind and put a knife to his throat while the other put a knife to his stomach.

They took his cash, wallet, cellphone and the pizza, along with the bag.

The bags cost about $200 each.

“I think they are not human beings,” said the shop owner of the culprits. “We are not rich people. We are working 14 to 15 hour days trying to make a living.”

He and his wife own the franchise, but asked not to be named because they are not allowed to speak with media due to franchise regulations.

“They are scared,” the wife said of the drivers.

She said the older driver joked, “I’m a Turkish guy. I’m not scared,” after Friday’s incident, but has since changed his tune a bit.

Still, he was back at work Monday. He has two weeks left before he heads back to Turkey for six months.

Police said they’re looking for connections between the two incidents.

“Is there a group of these guys going around doing it? I can’t say,” said acting Sgt. Mike Walker.

Similar robberies have been known to happen throughout the city.

The one suspect seen in the latest robbery is described as a 6-foot tall English-speaking white man, who is about 25. He was wearing a black sweater and black balaclava over his face.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 613-236-1222 ext. 5116 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
