OTTAWA - Police have charged a 20-year-old man with two counts of attempted murder after a man and woman in their 40s were stabbed early Saturday morning.

The victims' names have not been made public, but police said the man remains in stable condition while the woman is in critical but stable condition in hospital.

Police were called to a home in the city's west end after neighbours reported a disturbance inside the house around 5 a.m. Saturday.

They found the common-law couple inside the home suffering from stab wounds.

Police chased the suspect in his vehicle, with the pursuit ending when he ditched his car near a cop station and took off on foot into a bushy area.

Police using sniffer dogs eventually caught the suspect. Richard Keith Blake, 20, of Ottawa, faces numerous charges in addition to attempted murder, including two counts each of aggravated assault, forcible confinement and uttering death threats as well as one count each of break and enter, theft and possessing a weapon.

He also faces charges related to the police pursuit. He is in police custody after a brief court appearance, and is next scheduled to appear on July 2.
