Bail denied in mother's suspected honour crime
By QMI Agency

MONTREAL – A judge denied bail Friday to a Montreal woman accused of stabbing her 19-year-old daughter in a possible honour crime.

The judge’s decision means that Johra Kaleki, 38, will stay behind bars.

The reasons for the decision can’t be reported because of a publication ban that will remain in place until the trial.

Kaleki’s daughter, Bahar Ebrahimi, was stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife after returning late on June 13 to her home in Dorval, a bedroom community west of the city.

Kaleki, a native of Afghanistan, was arrested and later found mentally fit to stand trial. She’s charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and armed assault.

The defendant’s husband, Ebrahim Ebrahimi, had tried to stop the stabbing and has since lobbied for his wife to be released. They have three other daughters, aged 6, 14 and 16.
